Quello mostrato accanto è il vecchio alfabeto manuale (detto anche dattilologia o anche alfabeto muto). Si tratta della vecchia versione, ormai in disuso, ma utilizzato per gioco dai bambini per "scrivere nell'aria" e quindi per parlare ad un amico senza emettere alcun suono. Inoltre possiamo utilizzarlo anche a distanza, magari usando un binocolo per vedere il nostro amico che sta "parlando".
 

In the picture here on the left, you can see an old hand-alphabet (named also dumb-alphabet) that children use for playing, writing in the air, so speaking with a friend without emitting any sound. You can use it also if you are far from your friend, using a binoculars, so that you can “see” your friend speaking. We don’t know, unfortunately, the English letters (J,K, W, Y), only X is known. We would appreciate if someone can write us English or American version of such alphabet.

Oggi viene in realtà utilizzato un alfabeto diverso (riporto qui la versione in uso, quella più moderna) che permette di utilizzare una sola mano e nessuna altra parte del corpo per fare tutte le lettere.
