 Per cominciare, un piccolo ripasso su come si scrivono i numeri. Nella figura seguente trovi un soroban a dieci cifre con il corrispondente valore in basso.

Per sommare 1 basta far scorrere in alto una perlina della sezione inferiore verso il divisorio. Per sommare 5 basta far scorrere verso il basso la perlina della sezione superiore verso il divisorio. Qui di seguito troverai la rappresentazione di alcuni numeri.

To add 1 you have to move upward a bead, up to the divider. To add 5 you move downwards a bead situated in the upper section. Hereunder the representation of some numbers.

Portiamo ora a zero il soroban.

Per sommare i numeri da 1 a 4 è sufficiente spostare verso l'alto il numero corrispondente di perline della sezione bassa. Se aggiungiamo 3 otteniamo quindi:

To add numbers from 1 to 4 you can move upwards a corresponding number of beads of the lower section. If we want to add 3, the representation is

Supponiamo ora di volere aggiungere 4. Come potrai notare non hai 4 perline nella sezione bassa e se utilizzi la perlina della sezione alta stai aggiungendo 5 e non 4; allora per aggiungere 4 dovrai aggiungere 5 e togliere 1. In sostanza aggiungi la perlina superiore da 5 e togli una perlina da 1. La situazione finale è la seguente:

If now we want to add 4, as you see you don’t have 4 other beads in the lower section, and if you use an upper bead you will add 5 and not 4; so to add 4 you will add 5 (adding an upper bead) and subtract 1 (moving down a lower bead). You will obtain:
 

Come regola generale possiamo dire che se la perlina da 5 non è utilizzata e tu devi sommare un numero da 1 a 4 pur non avendo a disposizione un numero sufficiente di perline da 1 dovrai seguire la tabella seguente:

As general rule, if you dispose of the 5 units bead, and you don’t have 1 units bead to add a number between 1 and 4, you will use the following combinations:
 

Nell'esempio precedente abbiamo usato la regola +4=+(5-1) con l'ormai evidente (spero!) significato. Quando il risultato di una somma è superiore a 9 occorre usare le perline della colonna delle decine. Ipotizzando di volere sommare 8 al risultato precedente appare evidente che il risultato è superiore a 9. In questo caso per sommare 8 è sufficiente sommare 10 e togliere 2. In pratica si somma 1 perlina della colonna delle decine e si sottraggono 2 perline dalla colonna delle unità ottenendo:

Proviamo adesso a sommare due numeri a due cifre: 16 + 65. Scriviamo 16 sul soroban.

Sul soroban la somma si fa a partire dalla cifra più alta per cui sommiamo 60.

Then we add the ten of 65, hence 60

Il passo successivo consiste nel sommare 5. Poiché non abbiamo 5 a disposizione sommiamo 10 e togliamo 5. Il risultato è:

Credo che il tutto ti sembri complicato ma è soltanto un po' diverso dal metodo che conosci. Con un po' di allenamento potrai diventare molto abile e ti stupirai della velocità che riuscirai a raggiungere nell'effettuare le somme.
